Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Archaeology archive

This project follows on from the completion of the archiving of the pre-1990 Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ sites at the Archaeology Data Service by Cotswold Archaeology, with funding from Historic England and in partnership with the city council, which has been launched online and includes selected summary “green” reports written by Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Archaeology and archive materials. Also available is an interactive map of sites relating to the Legionary Fortress and the City defences, and new introductions provided by Paul Bidwell and Stuart Blaylock. The archive reports can be found on the website.

Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Archaeological Reports

Five major reports have been published in the Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Archaeological Reports series. As these become out of print the hope is to make PDFs available, the first of which - John Allan’s Medieval and Post-Medieval Finds from Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ, 1971-1980 – is available now courtesy of the University of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ Press (see below).

1: Paul Bidwell, The Legionary Bath-House and Basilica and Forum at Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ: with a summary account of the legionary fortress (1979, Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ City Council and the University of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ).

2: Mark Maltby, Faunal Studies on Urban Sites: the Animal Bones from Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ, 1971-1975 (1979, University of Sheffield, Department of Prehistory and Archeology).

3: John Allan, Medieval and Post-Medieval Finds from Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ, 1971-1980 (1984, Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ City Council and the University of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ)

4: Neil Holbrook and Paul T. Bidwell, Roman Finds from Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ (1991: Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ City Council and the University of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ).

5. Stuart Blaylock, Bowhill: the archaeological study of a building under repair in Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ, Devon, 1977-1995 (2002, English Heritage).

Smythen Street pottery report

It has not been possible to write up the excavations at Smythen Street as part of EAPIT, but Paul Bidwell and Alex Croom have prepared a pottery report and catalogue.

Inventory of pottery from sites excavated 1980-90

The Roman pottery found during excavations carried out in Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ from 1971 to 1979 were published in Neil Holbrook and Paul Bidwell’s (1991) Roman Finds From Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ, with the microfiche for that volume including a catalogue of the Roman pottery from those excavations.

A typescript catalogue of the Roman pottery from the excavations carried out in Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ between 1980 and 1980 was also produced but never published but is now made available below.
